SUNDAY IS GLAD DAY

PSA 122 1 “I was glad when they said unto me,
Let us go into the house of the LORD.”

How to get Something out of every service. Something that will make your heart glad. Something that will help you every week look forward to church.

While at Shawnee Baptist years ago I started an Adult Sunday School Class I called the Glad Class.  The class grew.  I trained a teacher and started another class.  Over time by repeating that process, the four original struggling classes became 14 thriving adult Bible classes.  Sunday at Greater Vision Baptist Church where I am now serving with Pastor Tim Russ I will be teaching in Sunday School some of the points below that I believe God used to help mature the Christians, involve them in outreach and generated a deeper love for Sunday School.

1.  HAVE CHRIST IN YOUR HEART

2.  HAVE A BIBLE IN YOUR HAND

3.  HAVE AN UNCHURCHED FRIEND BY YOUR SIDE

4.  HAVE A POSITIVE FAITH ATTITUDE OF IN YOUR MIND

5.  HAVE A PROPER PREPARATION IN PRAYER

If a large number of our people will begin to practice these ideas a great spirit of revival will be generated in our churches.

4 THINGS CHRISTIAN WORKERS NEED…

(2 Corinthians 5:20-6:1)  “Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God. {21} For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. (6:1) We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.”

I’m not talking about specific standards, requirements, qualifications, training, gifts and callings that should be part of everyone holding an office in the Lord’s work.

I’m talking about personal characteristics and commitments that are necessary to your success and mine as a Christian even if you never hold an official “position” in the church.  Although my prayer is that every Christian will ultimately have a significant place of service.

THE CHRISTIAN WORKER SHOULD HAVE

1. OPTIMISM –The Optimist says, “Things could be worse” The Pessimist says, “They probably will.”

(Philippians 4:8)  “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

  1. Some Christian Workers Fail Because They Are Pessimistic. Their Looks, Tones, And Gestures Project a Negative Aura.
  2. Optimism Is A Requirement For Doing God’s Work. Look For The Best; Expect The Best; Do Your Best. –
  3. Positive Attitudes Stimulate Joy And Enthusiasm. Many People Will Go Where They Can Find A Joyous Atmosphere.
  4. I’m not talking about the positive mental attitude. I’m talking about a positive faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and the Word of God.

(Ephesians 6:7)  “With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:”

2. ORGANIZATION – Not the final answer to every problem … But it sure helps improve any situation

(Titus 2:7)  “In all things showing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,” – Think of that, God wants you to be a pattern.  Something that someone else could use as an example of how to live the Christian life.  He mentions a few items.

Uncorruptness in Doctrine – Corrupt is Rusting, Rotting, Deteriorating, Disintegrating

Gravity – Feet on the Ground

Sincerity – Head screwed on straight  –  (2 Timothy 1:7)  “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

A. The Kingdom Of God Often Suffers Financial And Numerical Losses Because Of Lack Of Organization.

B. Objectives should be organized not just shots in the dark. (Ephesians 4:14)  “That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;”

C. Organization Benefits Christian Workers. Don’t Agonize, ORGANIZE. Your life, Prayer Time, Bible Reading, Soul Winning, Schedule, Etc.

D. Organize your garage. Organize your kitchen drawer.  Organize your closet, your finances, your workday, etc.

E. But by all means organize your spiritual life.  (Your prayer life, your time in the Word, Your preparation for your service in the church, your soul-winning, etc)

3. OBEDIENCE – (Acts 26:19) ” … I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision:” The Apostle Paul was obedient to the heavenly vision God had given him. Obsticals and opposition did not deter him.  In (Philippians  3:14) the Apostle Paul said,  “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”

  1. Paul Succeeded In Doing God’s Work Because He Obeyed The Lord, He Followed God’s Directions.
  2. Christian Workers Often Fail Today Because Of Disobedience. You Must Choose Your Way Or God’s Will.
  3. Often the only way to help someone is to force them to make a choice. Success In God’s Work Means Doing His Will. – (Ephesians 5:17) “Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.”

I am afraid that we have cheapened grace calling anyone who hints of a command a legalist.  I won’t take space in this post to deal with that highly explosive and divisive issue.  I will say that anyone that understands a direct command or a New Testament principle given by Christ should be more than willing to do their best with the help of Christ to obtain the victory of obedience.

TEST YOUR OBEDIENCE BY THE FOUR COMMANDMENTS OF JOHN 15

(John 15:10)  “If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.”

(John 15:12) “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.”

(John 15:14)  “Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.”

(John 15:17)  “These things I command you, that ye love one another.”

4. OUTREACH – LOOK AT PAUL’S TESTIMONY – (Acts 26:15-18) “And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. {16} But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;{17} Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, {18}To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.”

V 16 PURPOSE – To make thee a minister and a witness

V 17 PROTECTION – Jesus will protect us from being harmed by those to whom He sends us.

V 18 POWER – To overcome Satan and lead the lost to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Optimism, Organization, Obedience and Outreach will only happen in our lives as we recognize the need for them and seek God’s help in obtaining them.  The biggest room in the world is room for improvement.  Will you ask God to show you any areas of weakness and in sincerity promise Him that you will do whatever is necessary with His help to become a stronger worker. Praying that the grace which he has shed abroad won’t simply be a guarantee of heaven but also help us all to become significant servants in this present world.

Easter Poems

COME FORTH!

Before the tomb Christ stood one day
And dried the people’s tears away
As He spoke forth in mighty voice
That made Judea’s hills rejoice,
“Come forth!”

Inside the tomb Christ lay one morn;
Defeated seemed salvation’s horn;
But God the Father spoke the word
And this He said tho’ no man heard,
“Come forth!”

Inside the tomb of sin I lay,
The price of sin I had to pay;
But Christ, the raiser of the dead,
Spoke to my poor bound soul and said
“Come forth!”

And when that great and final sound
Shall raise our loved ones from the ground,
‘Twill be the last time we shall hear
That glorious sound upon our ear;
“Come forth!”

HOW DO I KNOW
Eugene M. Harrison

How do I know that Christ is risen?
What proof have I to give?
He touched my life one blessed day,
And I began to live.

How do I know He left the tomb
That Easter long ago?
I met Him just this morning, and
My life is all aglow.

How do I know that endless life
He gained that day for me?
His life within is proof enough
Of immortality.

How do I know that Christ still lives
Rich blessings to impart?
I know it’s true because He lives
And reigns within my heart.

When A Friend Goes To Heaven

WHEN A FRIEND GOES TO HEAVEN

I have had two dear friends of a lifetime leave their earthly ministry and enter Heaven’s gates this year. Both of them Great men of God with faithful godly wives and wonderful families. We all miss them dearly. I still have waves of grief sweep over me from time to time. I am not a crier under most conditions. But I have shed tears many times reminiscing over these two faithful servants of God.

One was R. B. Adamson. We went to church together as boys in Louisville, KY at Southside Baptist Church. He became a pastor in Bowling Green, KY while I was there working for IBM. After much faithful prodding on his part with weekly visits my wife, Nancy, and I attended Bethel Baptist Church where he was pastoring. Before long I had rededicated my life to Christ, my wife had gotten saved and we began to serve the Lord. We never looked back. We became lifelong friends with Bro. R. B. and his dear wife Sondra. It wasn’t long until God made it clear to me that God was calling me to full time Christian service. That was in 1966 (47 years ago). He was a faithful preacher and pastor until God took him home this year. I preached his funeral.

The other was Ed Snider. I met Bro. Ed at Glendale Baptist Church 46 years ago. We both along with our wives Sheila and Nancy became members there about the same time. When I became a staff member at Glendale Bro. Ed became like a volunteer assistant. When God called me to Louisville to pastor Shawnee Baptist Church, Bro. Ed took much of my staff responsibility. It wasn’t but a few years until I needed a faithful staff member. I called Bro. Ed and he joined me there in September of 1976 serving as a loyal associate for 33 years. Our families literally grew up together. After I resigned as pastor of Shawnee he continued to serve the pastor and people of Shawnee until God took him home to Heaven this year. I preached his funeral.

When a friend goes to Heaven two verses come to mind that bring peace and even joy to my soul.

Psalms 116:15 “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.”
When Bro. R. B. and Bro. Ed woke up in God’s presence it was a wonderful event, a blessed event… Like when your children come home from a long absence… This verse calls it, “Precious.” God is Blessed

Rev 14:13 “And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.”
Not only is it precious to the LORD, it is also a Blessed event for those who die in the Lord. What a glorious eternal day. Resting from labours Rejoicing in rewards from heavenly work they did on earth. So not only is God blessed but our friends in Heaven are Blessed.
In Heaven everyone is rejoicing. It seems we are the only ones still grieving. I suppose we will miss our loved ones until we meet them in Heaven. Still we can believe God and press on in spiritual victory with thanksgiving.

1Co 15:57-58 “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (58) Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”

Thank the Lord that the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ from the grave takes the sting out of death and victory away from the grave. We will see our loved ones again

In this Easter season as we think of our living Lord let’s also remember our living loved ones waiting for us on the other side.

1Corinthians 15:20 “But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.”

Mark 16:6 “… Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.”

John 11:25-26 “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: (26) And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?”

Now let’s get busy inviting our living friends, neighbors, co-workers, relatives and everyone we meet to meet our living Saviour.

Let’s rejoice in the empty tomb. Let’s tell them the gospel story.
Let’s give our testimony. Let’s bring them in. If they don’t come …. Let’s invite them again.

PRAY FOR MY FRIEND

True friends do not often come along. Forty five years ago, Nancy and I met a Young couple in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Ed and Sheila Snider. There was an immediate friendship forged between the four of us. Our friendship has been true and lasting. Our friendship has been centered in our lives as Christians. We have served together for many years. Bro. Ed and I served together at Glendale Baptist Church in Bowling Green, Kentucky. I became the pastor of Shawnee Baptist Church in 1972 and Bro. Ed joined me there as my Associate Pastor in 1976. I can hardly think of a task he did not perform at Shawnee during those years. When I left Shawnee after 37 years Bro. Ed remained and continues on staff to this day.

Bro. Ed has been battling cancer for a number of years. For the last year this battle has intensified. He has gone through surgery and numerous treatments including chemotherapy. This has been very difficult on his wife Sheila, his children and grandchildren. Please pray for them.

I know it has been very difficult for Bro. Ed as well. Although when he is able to communicate he has been upbeat, positive and praising the Lord. He has been in and out of treatment including hospitalization and surgeries. He is in the hospital as I write this post and in very urgent need of prayer. At this time he is scheduled to have surgery tomorrow, Thursday March 27, 2014 at 2:00 PM Eastern time. I know that you will be reading this from many areas of the country. Many of you know the Sniders and love them as we do.

Would you please take some time and pray for my dear friend. Pray that if it could be God’s will that he would give healing and strength to this faithful and loyal servant of Christ.

James 5:16c, “…The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”
